These works evolved from a series of sound sculptures powered by the elements, the function of which was reliant on weather conditions and heavily influenced by the work of Peter Appleton. As the pieces developed I found that I was more drawn toward the movement in the works than the sound and became more aware and influenced by the work of kinetic or mobile artists such as Alexander Calder, George Rickey and Jean Tinguely. Although physical balance is important to this body of work, so are the latent possibilities of the materials and mechanisms. There is also an element of contradiction within the kinetic works as some of the more complicated mechanisms achieve underwhelming conclusions and vice versa. This unconscious playfulness possibly lies within an extension of a childhood love of the inventions and machines of Heath Robinson and Roland Emmet linked with an adult fascination with Victorian patents and the proposed works of Panamerenko.
