This series of boxlike objects began as a form of 3D doodling or meditation, whilst I figured out the realisation of mechanisms for the kinetic and larger scale works. The devices have since evolved into a separate on going series of works which uses the notion of boxes as keep safes or sanctuaries. This thought/notion also reflects a personal interest in reliquaries, catacombs, totems, icons and ancestor worship. Therefore the contents of the boxes can be translated in various ways. As the series has progressed the works have been influenced by other artists notably the Fluxus and Arte Povera movements and the work of artists such as Joseph Cornell’s and Lucas Samaras’ early works. This body of work along with the Sketchbooks and Soul Vessels shares a hereditary, but sub-conscious, hoarding mentality that may explain my fascination with Cornell’s compulsive and impulsive collecting, the impenetrable boxes made by Samaras and the boxed multiples built by the Fluxus group.
